孔雀明王は、インドの女神マハーマーユーリーで、パーンチャ・ラクシャー（五守護女神）の一柱です。マハーマーユーリーは「偉大な孔雀」の意味で、憤怒の相が特徴である明王のなかで唯一、慈悲を表した菩薩形をもつています。
孔雀の上に乗り、一面四臂の姿で表されることが多く、4本の手にはそれぞれ倶縁果、吉祥果、蓮華、孔雀の尾を持つています。孔雀は害虫やコブラなどの毒蛇を食べることから孔雀明王は「人々の災厄や苦痛を取り除く功徳」があるとされています。
信仰の対象となった後年になると、孔雀明王は毒を持つ生物を食べるとされ、人間であれば、煩悩の象徴である三毒（貪り・嗔り・痴行）を喰らって仏道に成就せしめる功徳がある仏という解釈が一般的になりました。
そして、魔を喰らうことから大護摩に際して除魔法に孔雀明王の真言を唱える宗派も多いのです。
また雨を予知する能力があるとされ祈雨法（雨乞い）にも用いられていました。
孔雀明王を本尊とした密教呪法は孔雀経法とよばれています。真言密教において孔雀経法による祈願は鎮護国家の大法とされ最も重要視されている。

Mahamayuri is the Indian goddess Mahamayuri and one of the pillars of the Pancha Lakshar (Goddess of the Five Guardians). Mahamayuri means “great peacock” and has the only bodhisattva shape that expresses mercy among the Myo Kings who are characterized by the phase of anger.
Riding on a peacock, it is often represented in the form of four elbows on one side, with four hands holding a peacock, auspicious fruit, lotus flower, and peacock tail, respectively. Since peacocks eat poisonous snakes such as pests and cobras, Mahamayuri is said to have “the merit of removing people’s disasters and pains.”
In later years when it became the object of worship, Mahamayuri is said to eat poisonous creatures, and if it is a human being, it will be fulfilled in Buddhism by eating the three poisons (greed, moha, and deception) that are symbols of worldly desires. The interpretation of Buddha, which has the merit of making it, has become common.
And, because it eats demons, there are many denominations that chant the true word of Mahamayuri for exorcism at the time of Ogoma.
It was also used in the prayer rain method (rain-making) because it is said to have the ability to predict rain.
The esoteric spell with Mahamayuri as its principal image is called the Peacock Keiho. In Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, prayers by the Peacock Economic Law are regarded as the law of the guardian state and are regarded as the most important.
