観音が時や所や相手に応じて三十三の姿に実を変えてあらわれるという考えから、 楊柳・龍頭・持経・円光・遊戯・白衣・蓮臥・滝見・施薬・魚籃・徳王・水月・一葉・青頸・ 威徳・延命 ・衆宝・岩戸・能静・阿耨・阿摩提・葉衣・瑠璃・多羅尊・蛤蜊・ 六時 ・普悲・ 馬郎婦・合掌・一如・不二・持蓮・ 灑水の三十三観音が生まれ、 西国や東国の三十三ヵ所の札所めぐりが行われるようになりました。
