浜辺で、子どもたちにいじめられている亀を見つけた浦島太郎。かわいそうに思った太郎は亀を助け、海へ帰してあげます。
数日後、助けた亀が太郎のもとに現れ、お礼に海の底にある竜宮城へ案内します。美しい竜宮城では、乙姫が太郎を温かく迎え、夢のような楽しい時間が流れていきました。
やがて故郷が恋しくなった太郎は、家へ帰ることを決意します。別れのとき、乙姫は「決して蓋を開けてはいけません」と言い、太郎に玉手箱を渡しました。
亀の背中に乗って懐かしい浜辺へ戻った太郎。しかし、そこには太郎を知る人が一人もいません。変わり果てた故郷を前に途方に暮れた太郎は、乙姫の言葉を忘れ、玉手箱を開けてしまいます。
箱の中から白い煙が立ち上り、煙に包まれた太郎は、白髪の老人へと姿を変えてしまいました――。

One day, a kind young fisherman named Urashima Taro sees a group of children mistreating a turtle on the beach. Feeling sorry for the creature, he rescues it and gently releases it back into the sea.
Several days later, the turtle returns. To thank Taro for his kindness, it carries him on its back to the magnificent Dragon Palace beneath the sea. There, the beautiful Princess Otohime welcomes him warmly, and Taro spends what seems like a brief and joyful time in a dreamlike underwater world.
Before long, Taro begins to miss his home and decides to return to his village. As they part, Princess Otohime gives him a mysterious treasure box called a tamatebako. She warns him, “You must never open this box.”
When the turtle brings Taro back to the familiar shore, everything has changed. No one recognizes him, and everyone he once knew has disappeared. Confused and overcome with sorrow, Taro forgets Otohime’s warning and opens the box.
A cloud of white smoke rises from inside and surrounds him. In an instant, Taro becomes an old man with white hair and a deeply lined face.
