The story is widely known to the public through textbooks and has the following contents.
A person named Taro Urashima encounters a child bullying a turtle on the beach.
He buys the turtle, protects it, and releases it to the sea. A few days later, a turtle appears,
carrying Taro on his back as a thank-you and taking him to the underwater Ryugu. Otohime welcomes Taro at Ryugu. After a while,
when Taro tells him that he wants to go home,
she gives her a tamatebako, saying that Otohime “never open the lid.” When Taro rides a turtle and returns to the original beach,
no one knows Taro. When Taro forgets the advice and opens his Tamatebako ,
White smoke is generated from the inside, and Taro changes into a wrinkled old man with gray hair.
